Advanced Technologies for Industry 4.0

Industry 4.0, the fourth industrial revolution, changed how we approach manufacturing processes. Digitisation, additive manufacturing, and automation in warehouses and factories allow for higher accuracy, efficiency, and consistency. See how you can benefit from implementing advanced technologies in your facilities and why you should consider it.

How Can You Benefit from Using Advanced Technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0)

From mass customisation and production to advanced data analytics and predictive maintenance, advanced technologies in smart factories offer essential benefits.

Mass Production and Customisation

Digital transformation reduces production time and speeds up data and information exchange.

Traceability and Predictive Maintenance

Employing advanced technologies like audio processing and computer vision enables constant real-time monitoring of equipment and production lines. It can help track the product journey for future optimisations. Consistent monitoring enables the detection of anomalies in the equipment and swift reaction to avoid malfunctions and long downtimes in the production line.

Virtualisation and Decentralisation

Virtualisation techniques in Industry 4.0, such as cloud computing, provide scaleable computing resources and services over the Internet. Cloud computing is a reliable tool for data storage, real-time analytics, collaboration platforms, and software-as-a-service (SaaS) solutions.

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) allows for decentralising operations. It helps in asset tracking, real-time monitoring, and decentralised decision-making by enabling the devices to communicate. It provides valuable insights and helps you adapt to fluctuating market changes through distributed decision-making that doesn’t require central approval. Advanced adaptive algorithms in decentralised systems can predict market trends and adjust production schedules accordingly, ensuring supply meets demand more accurately.

Enhanced Productivity and Efficiency

Implementing AI-supported automated systems can significantly reduce manual labour and increase production speed. Autonomous machines and robots can perform specific tasks independently with high precision and accuracy. IoT sensors and predictive analytics continuously monitor the health of machinery, predicting failures before they occur and scheduling maintenance proactively, reducing equipment downtime and prolonging its life.

Improved Sustainability

Advanced technologies in Industry 4.0 allow for more efficient resource management and reduce waste by automating processes and remote operations. IoT sensors contribute to energy savings by controlling sighting automatically, turning it on only when needed. AI algorithms can continuously analyse energy usage patterns to optimise processes and predict future needs. Software design tools help reduce waste for a more sustainable design and production process.

Optimised Supply Chain Management

AI and machine learning are crucial ingredients in the modern manufacturing industry and optimised supply chain. The algorithms provide accurate forecasts, optimise inventory levels, improve supplier relationships, and streamline logistics operations. It allows you to respond more to market changes, reduce operational costs, and improve overall supply chain efficiency and sustainability.

What are the Typical Technology Challenges of Industry 4.0, and How to Overcome Them?

Initial Workforce Skill Gap

New technologies require additional skills that you may not have on board. Upskilling employees through training programs or partnerships with educational institutions can address this.

Integration of Legacy Systems

Integrating new technologies isn’t always compatible with the existing systems. However, deploying gradual integration strategies and middleware solutions helps to transition more seamlessly to digital technologies.

High Initial Cost

The initial investment into Industry 4.0 technologies can be significant, especially for small and medium enterprises. However, it can be reasonably lowered with careful cost-benefit analysis, phased implementation of digital solutions, or government financing for digital transformation initiatives.

Case Studies: Our Contribution to Industry 4.0 Digital Transformation

How Blockchain Technology Improved the Process of Circulation of RTIs

  • The BARTI project aimed to reduce the number of kilometres driven by trucks to collect and transport empty RTIs within one logistics ecosystem and ensure the privacy of sensitive business data within the supply chain during the RTI circulation process.
  • We applied blockchain to provide an automated RTI circulation ecosystem, allowing supply chain participants to exchange information about their returnable packaging (e.g. pallets) balance without sharing the sensitive information with others.
  • The efforts resulted in improved freight monitoring and reduced paper documentation. Thanks to real-time access to confirmed information about RTI balance, losses and potential theft were significantly reduced.

Productive 4.0: An International Collaboration for Promoting Industry 4.0

  • Productive 4.0 is an international project that promotes a digitised industry. Its ultimate goal is to create a single, digitised strategy for all industrial sectors.
  • Our experts contributed to software and hardware aspects by creating technologies for product traceability across transparent, connected and digitalised value chains, such as digital product footprint.
  • DAC.digital’s team co-created a digital product footprint, including cooperative product lifecycle management, Semantic Knowledge Processing Technology, a prototype of a secure one-chip computer with a built-in Secure Element, and transaction security technology for hardware-enabled authentication and authorisation of blockchain transactions.
