600x Faster Processing for an Online Construction Documentation System

Worker collecting construction site photos for automated documenting for AI algorithm

Client

  • Name: Oculo
  • Line of business: construction, software development
  • Founding year: 2019
  • Size: 11-50 employees
  • Country: UK (London)

Oculo makes documentating construction sites as efficient and easy as possible thanks to 360-degree video collection analyzed by computer vision.

Challenge: Live construction progress verification with too much video data to process in real time

Oculo faced a big challenge: their existing process for handling visual data and creating reports was slow, prone to error, and lacked possibility of adding real-time insight. On top of that, they struggled to turn hours of heavy video recordings into useful visualizations.

Solution: A streamlined algorithm and smarter architecture.

Our team reduced video processing time by sevenfold and added new features for remote BIM access, so construction workers can add notes while being on site. We carried out processing time optimization tasks and proposed an AWS-based cloud architecture that we implemented.

Their existing progress verification tool was too slow to provide live insights

Before working with DAC.digital, Oculo was already using 360-degree cameras to capture detailed visual records of construction sites. This helped them catch construction errors, spot concrete defects, and track progress for their clients. All while the building was still going up.

While this form of video collection improved documentation process, it posed a new challenge. How could they convert hours of video footage into easily digestible formats that enabled live updates? That’s when Oculo came to us.

Oculo approached our team to streamline their construction documentation process. The goal was to transform their existing approach into a more efficient one. One that the construction crews could use on the go.

Our AI and DevOps experts cut video processing time by 600%

We introduced Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Kubernetes to streamline and accelerate processing of the captured video data.

Previously, the processing workload was executed on a single machine. Now, it is distributed across a dynamically orchestrated cluster of up to a hundred instances in the AWS cloud. These instances were activated on demand when the conversion process began, which greatly accelerated conversion time.

The partnership produced impressive outcomes. The time needed to transform 30 hours of video footage into a concise 30-minute visualisation was cut from 30 hours to 30 minutes.

Construction crews can now leave comments in BIM while still on site

In addition to the BIM system’s existing functionality, which allows users to compare the current construction status with previous stages, we enhanced its capabilities further. We introduced the ability to add notes within the system and optimized its performance. Our comprehensive approach aimed to provide architects and project managers with an even more powerful tool for tracking and managing construction projects.

But we didn’t end there. One of our key contributions was optimizing UX design, such as improving app navigation and resolving previous slowdowns. These ongoing efforts underscore our dedication to delivering innovative solutions that consistently address evolving client needs.

We continue our partnership with Oculo by adding new features to the app

Through our partnership with Oculo, DAC.digital successfully streamlined construction documentation, making it more efficient and automated while reducing costs and enabling BIM to store project insights.

The success of our partnership with Oculo has led to continued collaboration. Currently, we are working closely together on a mobile application where all the 360-degree recordings if the construction will be stored, so project members can watch them, leave comments, and leave updates on the progress.
