Arrowhead Tools (AHT)

for Engineering of Digitalisation Solutions

Project goal

Arrowhead Tools project aimed at developing and demonstrating Arrowhead Framework tooling for the design and run-time engineering of IoT and System of Systems to enable industry digitalization, automation, and IT/OT.

DAC.digital role

DAC.digital developed an IoT device onboarding procedure using Hardware Security Modules for hardware-based device identification and authentication of IoT nodes. It was vital that Bluetooth Low energy for the data transmission, and HSM was used with the NFC module to perform the authentication of the device

Importance & Background

The role of the Internet of Things (IoT), from everyday use to large-scale industrial applications, has been expanding at an accelerating pace. Currently, there exist several barriers which prevent the total integration of operation technology. For instance, at the time when the AHT project was being proposed, there existed a low efficiency in the engineering industry in being able to leverage the IoT and the “system of systems” into its products.

There existed a need for new and advanced digitalization and automation tools, especially in the European engineering industry. AHT project set forth to develop these tools.  The introduction of the AHT framework could reduce the costs of developing and introducing flexible and secure digitization and automation solutions by about 20 to 50 %. Thus helping Europe become more competitive, and create new jobs and business opportunities. At the same time help in reducing energy consumption and the environmental footprint.

General Project Solution

The Arrowhead Framework has used the following tactics to meet its goals and get closer to its vision. By turning the IoT’s functionality into services, interoperability is addressed.

Information sharing through services is the abstraction of communication (i.e. open-source interface descriptions).

Services are loosely connected between service providers and service consumers; there are no hardwired ties.

Late (runtime) binding: To get connection information, users use the Arrowhead core systems.

Furthermore, the definition of local clouds addresses the development of an industrial cyber-physical system of systems.

A local cloud must provide the following essential services to function:

  • The ability to register and find services in the local cloud.
  • Exchanges of services between service providers and customers are authorized and authenticated.
  • Orchestration of system of systems, or the exchange of services between producers and customers.
  • Arrowhead Framework core systems provide further assistance for the development of IoT-based automation. Here There are also suggestions for dealing with semantic translation and interoperability.
